Found Object Art: Luke 8:14 Assemblage pt.1

Posted on January 19, 2017

This assemblage art called, “The Anointed One,” was inspired one day as I was reading Luke 4: 18 during family devotions:

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.

Before I began making my art, I took time to brainstorm and write down words, phrases and ideas of what I could use in my assemblage.  My list looked something like this: Jesus,  scroll with scripture, blind eyes, broken heart, captives breaking free, gospel (good news), broken rope or chain, the spirit of the Lord etc. etc.

Then I started rummaging through my collection of found and used items, looking for a suitable base.  How about using an old tray? I could also use a picture frame seeing that I have a lot of those lying around.  I decided to use an 11 by 14 inch canvas board.

I prepared my board by applying homemade gesso made by mixing approximately 1 part cheap white glue, 3 parts water, 6 parts baby powder and black paint.  (I say approximately because I am not well-known for my ability to follow recipes.)

I created the background using an antique textured background image from Pixabay, a public domain photo site.  After I downloaded it, I opened it in Microsoft Paint where I desaturated and lightened it.  I printed off several copies and painted them using a wash of dark brown and black acrylic paint, allowing the texture of the image to come through.

After the paint was dry, I tore the paper into 2 to 3 inch pieces  and used watered down white glue to adhere them to the  canvas.  To make it easier, I put the paper edges and corners along the edges and corners of the canvas.

This is the first in a series of 4 posts. Found Object Art: Luke 8:14 Assemblage pt. 2.
